Georgia drivers face a lot of distractions on the road. Any one of these distractions has the potential to cause a deadly crash. While you can avoid some of them, others are harder to evade.
It is important to understand the source of as many distractions as possible. This way, you can avoid them more efficiently.
Cognitive and visual distractions
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are many types of driver distractions. However, most of these distractions fall into three categories: cognitive, visual and physical.
Cognitive distractions host the largest array of potential issues. This is because a cognitive distraction by definition is anything that detracts your attention from the task at hand – in this case, driving. Examples include thinking about what you will make for dinner or trying to remember directions to where you are going.
Visual distractions can take place inside or outside of the vehicle. They involve anything that takes your eyes away from the road. An external example may be a car crash happening in another lane. Inside the car, you might take your eyes off the road to talk to a passenger in the back seat or manage an unruly pet.
Physical distractions and more
Physical distractions take your hands off the wheel. This can include drinking or eating while driving. It can also include much more common and mundane tasks like adjusting the temperature control or changing your music.
As you can see, almost anything can act as a distractor. This is why constant vigilance and attention is so crucial to your ability to function on the road.
