The federal government has a strategy to reduce car crash deaths

On Behalf of | Jun 12, 2022 | Car Accidents |

Getting involved in a car wreck in Georgia can lead to death or personal injuries. If you’ve gotten hurt in a motor vehicle accident as a result of the negligence of others, it can be frustrating. Unfortunately, you’re not alone. A number of other individuals have dealt with these circumstances caused by drunk drivers or people who are speeding.

Car crash fatalities increased in 2021

In 2021, the number of fatalities that were caused by car accidents increased significantly. From 2020 to 2021, a 10% jump to 43,000 was recorded. This tragic trend sparked the federal government’s attention, paving the way for the National Roadway Safety Strategy (NRSS).

The plan to make U.S. roads safer

The main goal for drafting the NRSS is to create safer people, roads, vehicles and speeds. The U.S. Department of Transportation seeks to reduce deaths and serious injuries significantly. This first step is working toward a long-term goal of reaching zero fatalities on U.S. roads.

Encouraging safe behavior by individuals who are driving is essential. Statistics indicate that risky behaviors contribute to many automobile accidents. These actions include:

  • Driving while intoxicated
  • Speeding
  • Distractions
  • Unrestrained passengers

A lot of people’s loved ones would be alive today if these factors were reduced or eliminated.

New legislation may reduce car crash fatalities and injuries

A new mandate by the Biden administration and Congress is for automakers to implement a high-tech way to keep intoxicated individuals from driving. Under the legislation, intoxicated people will not be able to drive a vehicle if a monitoring system identifies them as too drunk to drive. Plans for new vehicles to use the systems are scheduled for as early as 2026.

The steps the federal government is taking to curb personal injuries and fatalities that are caused by reckless behavior and driving are encouraging. In the future, deaths and injuries from car crashes may be drastically reduced.
